During a Combat Air Patrol on January 27, 1991, 75 miles south of Baghdad, Capt Denney engaged in a low-altitude pursuit, swiftly firing an AIM-9M at close range to destroy a MiG-23; however, an unexpected realization by “Opie” revealed the original target was two MiGs flying in close formation, prompting Capt Denney to eliminate the second target at a half-mile range, exemplifying the challenges and complexities faced by pilots in the intense aerial dynamics of Operation Desert Storm.
