On January 27, 1991, Capt. Powell, patrolling in a Combat Air Patrol 75 miles south of Baghdad with his wingman “Opie,” engaged a low-flying radar contact at 12,000 ft. After launching an AIM-7 at 6 miles, initially striking the ground, he identified two aircraft in close formation. Reacting swiftly, he fired a second Sparrow missile, successfully eliminating both the Mirage and the MiG. This showcased Capt. Powell’s quick thinking and adaptability in navigating the complex aerial environment of Operation Desert Storm.
