On February 11, 1991, Capt Steve Dingee and his wingman Capt Mark McKenzie, flying as PISTOL flight in a Combat Air Patrol during Operation Provide Comfort, detected an Iraqi Air Force transport helicopter, and after firing AIM-7 Sparrow missiles in a rear aspect intercept, successfully destroyed the target, marking the 31st F-15 kill, with the challenge of determining the first-impacting missile resulting in both pilots being awarded half of a kill each, highlighting the complexities of assessing aerial victories in the context of complex operations.
